LIPHE4 directs its research activity towards the improvement of the use of Science for Governance, with the aim of employing scientific knowledge as a space for dialogue and as a support tool for decision making. The field of Sustainability Studies is characterized by irreducible uncertainties and complexity that allow for different representations of the same system by different observers. As a consequence, the quality of the analysis invariably depends on its relevance for the various actors involved, having different legitimate perspectives, and must be assured through an extended peer review process.

Within this context, Liphe4 offers the following services:

• Consulting and academic support in the fields of: energy metabolism, energy policy, farming systems and rural development, water metabolism, and urban metabolism.
• Consulting and academic support in participatory non-expert involvement, dialogue and knowledge brokerage.
• Training courses on: energy analysis, the MuSIASEM toolkit, and science-society interface. Courses are tailored to the specific interest of the client, ranging from more theoretical and methodological training to case-specific and focused applications.
• Educational programmes for high school students.
