LIPHE4 SUMMER SCHOOL - 2018 EDITIONOrganized in collaboration with the ENVIROSPACE Lab of the University of Geneva and the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Can Cities Be Sustainable?Novel Tools to Explore Urban Metabolism2-6 July 2018University of Geneva (Uni Carl Vogt), Switzerland
Purpose of the Summer SchoolThe general purpose of the LIPHE4 Summer School is to familiarize the participants with the theory and applications of Multi-scale Integrated Analysis of Society and Ecosystem Metabolism (MuSIASEM). In this 2018 edition we will illustrate the use of MuSIASEM to carry out relational analysis (nexus approach) of the metabolic pattern of urban systems across different dimensions and scales of analysis. More specifically, the course will cover: (i) multi-scale integrated analysis of societal and ecosystem metabolism (MuSIASEM): accounting of water, energy, food and waste flows in relation to land uses and human activity; (ii) construction of a multi-level end-use matrix to characterize an urban metabolic pattern; (iii) relational analysis (resource nexus approach) applied to the metabolic pattern of urban systems; (iv) the role of externalization in sustaining the metabolism of urban systems. See the day-to-day program of the Summer School for more details. Course FormatThe five-day summer school consists in seminars and lectures alternated with hands-on working groups focused on selected cities, among which Geneva and Barcelona. The course is entirely taught in English. Participant Profile and pre-requisitesThe course is aimed at advanced students, researchers, and experienced practitioners. Participants are expected to have a good command of written and spoken English, and to have an interest in learning about novel approaches and ideas related to social-ecological systems, urban metabolism, integrated assessment, and sustainable development. Participants are encouraged to take the MOOC ‘Sustainability of Social-Ecological Systems: the Nexus between Water, Energy and Food’ prior to the start of the summer school (the MOOC is free of charge). The number of participants of the summer school is limited. Admission is on a first come first serve basis. Resource Persons
