Summer School Assessing Sustainable Development in the Greater Mekong
Sub-Region (GMS)

General Course
Orientation
This is a course designed for young researchers
and
professionals on methods and tools for analyzing regional
sustainability in an integrated and participatory way. Training is
conducted by internationally renown experts in the fields of integrated
sustainability analysis, participatory research, and global change
research. Participants will engage in an interactive learning
experience that allows for sharing of knowledge on issues such as:
♦ measuring sustainable development
♦ integrated analysis of the physical economy of GMS nations
♦ research approaches to poverty reduction and rural development
♦ Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
♦ regional sustainable development and Global Change research
♦ resource use systems; land use and land cover change, food and water
security, regional agricultural practices
The training applies practical, problem-oriented, and policy-relevant
research approaches. Participants will be enabled to conduct and inform
on sustainability research independently and identify the relevant
national sustainability issues as well as to suggest national and
regional research strategies to tackle these issues.
Participants
This is an advanced level program on Assessing
Sustainable
Development in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS). It is tailored for
researchers from public and private institutions and analysts involved
in regional sustainable development. Participants of this course should
possess a higher degree in social or natural sciences and experience in
research projects. It is recommended that participants come to the
training course with a research agenda that included regional
sustainable development issues. Participants are expected :
♦ to be able to communicate professionally in both written and spoken
English.
♦ to be in good health, both physically and mentally, and able to
attend the entire course.
♦ to have an interest in sustainable development, integrated
assessment, resource use, or global change research issues.
Organization of
summer school
The summer school was scheduled from 21st May to
1st June
2007. The program was organized along ten days of morning presentations
and related interactive afternoon sessions, plus introduction and
conclusion.
The summer school took place at the Mekong
Institute,
an independent Greater Mekong Subregion organisation providing
specialized learning programmes for key public and private sector
personnel in the areas of leadership, development and regional
cooperation. MI's residential learning facility is located on the
campus of Khon Kaen University in Northeast Thailand. It serves the
countries of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS): Cambodia, Lao PDR,
Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and Yunnan and Guangxi Provinces of Peoples
Republic of China.
