Organizing committeeMario Giampietro, INRAN, Rome, Italy Scope of the summer workshopThe summer school was aimed at offering a reference point on the state of the art in the field of sustainable development studies to young researchers and students. In particular, the workshop presented a complete overview, theoretical and applied, of recent analytic and participatory approaches for promoting sustainable development. For this purpose, the summer workshop comprised both lectures and hands-on case-studies. The summer workshop familiarized students with cutting-edge research and analysis by inviting renowned experts. Resources draw from the fields of Integrated Assessment, Social Multicriteria Evaluation, Participatory Approaches, and Biophysical Analysis. Students experienced an intense level of interaction with peers and senior researchers during a 7-day residential course. ParticipantsStudents from Germany, France, the USA, the Netherlands, Austria, India and Iran attended the summer workshop. They all were either PhD or Master students, or young professionals, interested in problems related to sustainable development and natural resource management. Organization of summer workshopThe summer school was scheduled from 20 to 27 August 2004. The program was organized along five days of morning presentations and related interactive afternoon sessions. Day one was dedicated to epistemological and conceptual issues of integrated assessment. Day two dealt with societal metabolism on multiple scales. Day three was dedicated to methods for biophysical analysis. Land time budget analysis was presented in day four, and finally day five dealt with participatory research. The second half of the program was centered on discussions on the application of integrated analysis to different research proposals by students. The summer school will took place in the picturesque town of Deutschlandsberg.
